Jinghong Song – Three Things Communities Can do to Help The Homeless

Prior to his employment as a writer, Jinghong Song spent years volunteering with homeless programs. The programs he managed worked with chronic homeless individuals and provided them with aid.

Homelessness is a serious problem in all major cities throughout the United States. On any given night, over 500,000 people are homeless in the United States. There are many ways that individuals and communities can contribute to the fight against homelessness. These are three ways communities can do so.

Communities can organize and encourage volunteer work at local homeless shelters. There are many  responsibilities that volunteers can undertake at homeless shelters, including answering the phone, serving food, sorting the mail, cleaning the floors, fixing appliances, washing the dishes, babysitting children, and more.

Communities can work together and provide educational opportunities to the homeless in their area. People can put their skills to use by teaching classes at homeless shelters. Teaching career specific skills such as carpentry, plumbing, childcare, and typing are immensely helpful skills for homeless individuals to attain.

Lastly, communities can help their homeless by reaching out to them. Mosques, Synagogues, and Churches can reach out to the homeless and invite them to their place of worship, regardless of their faith. This provides homeless individuals with shelter and hopefully food.
